Art + Social Justice Proposal

For my final project, I plan to combine my passions of painting and bringing to light the problems in our global society. The imagery that I make, will comment on various social issues including woman’s rights, problems of racism and anti-semetism, and immigration policies. When I think about art combined with social justice, I am reminded of resistance movements throughout history and even today when we see small forms of resistance in street art. Banksy is a popular example of how an artist can use their talents to spread a message of peace and why we need change in a sometimes a funny or perverted way. Image result for banksy panda

For example, Banksy’s panda holding guns is a reference to the issue of racism, in that a panda is white, black, and asian. By showing how easily racism can be broken down, we can see how silly it really is.

Bansy usually works with spray paint on buildings, but I will be making my own walls to mark up with oil paint. I am making three cradle panels at 4x6ft that will be either made to stand on their own or to hang on the wall. Once these panels are complete, I will use primarily black and white but with splashes of color, which can also be seen in Banksy’s art. When I complete each piece, they will be displayed around the St. Norbert College campus for others to enjoy and enter into a dialogue with their peers about social justice issues.

I am still working on what the imagery will be, but I work best when I see it on my canvas first. My paintings will be a little more directed to social justice than Banksy’s is, but I’m hoping to send as serious of a message as his work does.
